First quilts

One of my first customer quilts! Just a simple loop design with leaves and feathered hearts.

Pricing

I often get ask how much will it cost to for me to quilt a customers quilt.
Here is a simple guide line to get a close estimate. Remember this is NOT a final price.

Meander/Loops Measure your quilt both directions. Multiply the width by the length take that number and multiply by .015 then add 10.
For example if your quilt top measures 65" x 75" your first number will be 4875. Multiply 4875 by .015 = 73.12 Add 10 = 83.12. plus 8.3% tax for a total of $90.01

Pantograph Follow the same formula for Meander/loops above, except multiply by ..02 Add 10. So our example quilt will them be $107.50 plus 8.3% tax for a total of $116.40

Light Custom When you want to add a little more pizzazz to your quilt top, be it for a graduation present or a baby quilt something that is not heirloom but something just a bit special. (ribbons, leaves hearts, spirals and swirls)

Follow the same formula for Meander/loops above, except multiply by .02 Add 10. So our example quilt will them be $107.50 plus 8.3% tax for a total of $116.40

Medium Custom Now we are getting fancy! Feathered hearts, feathered borders, basic background fills, one color change if desired. Applique falls into this category also.

Follow the same formula for Meander/loops above, except multiply by .025 Add 10. So our example quilt will them be $131.87 plus 8.3% tax for a total of $142.81

Heavy Custom This quilt receives a LOT of attention. Each block gets it's own special treatment, lots of starts and stops, color changes. This is the quilt you will keep and cherish for years!

Follow the same formula for Meander/loops above, except multiply by .030 Add 10. So our example quilt will them be $156.25 plus 8.3% tax for a total of $169.21

Backing If I have to piece your backing for you there will be a $25 piecing fee.

Squaring backing. Please square you backing. There are a ton of tutorials on the internet on how to square a quilt back. If I have to square your backing there will be a $15 dollar charge.

Pressing If I have to press big wrinkles and creases out of your quilt top or backing there will be a $25 pressing fee.

Backing and Batting MUST be 10 inches larger than quilt top both length wise and width wise. If I must add to your backing or batting there will be a $30 fee for this service.

I do carry a selection of batting for you to choose from. Or you may supply your own batting. Please no packaged batting as the creases from the packaging are difficult to work out.

Open seams I do not stitch seams closed. If I find an open seam during the quilting process I will make a note of it on your paperwork and I will mark it with a large yellow headed pin. I will continue to quilt around the open seam and you are welcome to whip stitch the seam closed when your quilt is returned to you.

Trimming If you would like the excess backing trimmed off your quilt I will be happy to do so, there is a small $10 fee for this service. I will return all excess batting and backing to you unless otherwise noted.

Binding Service (Optional) ~ $.17/linear inch. Includes machine sewing to the front and hand sewing to the back. To figure your binding cost on a 72" x 90" quilt, add 72+72+90+90=324, then multiply x .17 = $55.60. Send extra fabric ~ we'll tell you how much you need.

Return Shipping Charges ~ $9.00 for most sizes. Quilts over 90" long ~ $14. $100 insurance included, additional insurance $2.50 per hundred.

Preparing your quilt for longarm quilting

Quilt Top:

1) Be sure quilt edges are squared off and even on all sides.

2) Clip and remove all loose threads. (A lint rollers work well for lifting the threads)

3) Press top so seams lie flat, this lessens chances of pleats and tucks.

4) Seams should be well secured, you will damage your quilt if you catch the quilting foot in a opening left by an unfinished seam.

5) Stay stitch ¼ “ around all 4 sides, this is recommended if there are any seams on the outer edge. (this step is optional, but helpful in keeping pieced boarders from unraveling)

6) Please mark the bottom of you quilt top with a slip that says bottom. This is very important on directional quilts. Also if you have a directional backing it must be labeled with a slip that says bottom. Please make sure to securely pin labels in place

Quilt Back:

1) Be sure you back is10” wider and 10” longer than your quilt top. Example, if your quilt is 65 x 75” Cut your backing to measure 75”x85”. This measurement is a MUST. You need to have room for the quilt to roll up and you MUST have at least 5” on each side for your clamps.

2) Backing need to be squared off with straight and even edges. There will be an extra charge for squaring backing. Please see price list above for amount

3) Press out creases and press seams flat.

4 )When piecing your backing please remove selvages from center seam. This will keep your backing from being tight in the center. I do not trim selvages, if not removed you will get pleats in you back. I will not be able to quilt them out, so will have to quilt them in.

Batting:

1) Cut batting to the same size at your backing, again, this batting size is a MUST!

2 )Making sure that batting is square with even edges.

3 )Use a quality batting, you have spent a lot of time making your quilt, now is not the time to go cheap. A quality batting makes a quality quilt. Ask me about the batting I carry.

Border 1st aid

Border 1^st Aid:

Do you stitch your borders on without pinning?

Do you sew from one end to the other, then cut off the excess fabric?

Please don’t. This can result in wavy borders, pleats or puffy/raised areas.

Wavy borders are some of the hardest things to deal with as a longarm quilter, follow the following steps to avoid wavy borders.

Lay your quilt top out flat, smooth and take three measurements from top to bottom (1.) one at a few inches from the right edge, (2.) one near the middle, and (3.) one at a few inches from the left edge.

Average your measurements if necessary.

Cut 2 strips. Divide into quarters and pin onto the quilt top before sewing. Some easing may be necessary.

Now you're ready to cut the remaining two borders. Take three more measurements this time from left edge to right edge (1.) one at a few inches from the top edge, (2.) one near the middle, and (3.) one at a few inches from the bottom edge.

Average your measurements if necessary.

Cut 2 strips. Divide into quarters and pin onto the quilt top before sewing.

Do this for each set of borders and you will always get nice smooth borders.
